It's my first Zane Grey book. It was recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. I am from that area of Arizona so it made the visual descriptions all the more fun to read. I was shocked at how contemporary it felt (i.e. social issues) and confirmed that there really is "nothing new under the sun." I recommend reading rather than listening - the whispernet audio was a little hard to swallow when the narrator read the female parts. It made me not like the spoiled, feminine city girl, Carley. However, it did not bother me for the more rough and tumble, Flo. And he was perfect for the rest. I also think it takes away from the scenic portions - easier to let your mind wander as he describes the great expanse. Hope that helps.Product details

A rich, spoiled and beautiful young woman goes West with the intention of bringing home her fiance to New York City. She finds the country in Arizona harsh but wild and with a beauty of its own. She is unable to talk her love into leaving the place that healed his wounds of body and spirit from the war. When she returns home she is dissatisfied with her shallow existence and longs for the canyons of the West.
Having regularly driven across Ohio for a few years made me curious about Zane Grey, but planning a two week road trip through Utah was what spurred me to start reading his books.
Wonderfully paced and vividly detailed, it provides us a true picture of the beauty of canyon country juxtaposing the rushed, insincere shallow nature of urban life and all it entails with the serene, sublime natural beauty of one of the most spectacular regions of our United States. Multifaceted gem of a tale of America's West.
While on vacation in AZ and after my tour of the Grand Canyon this past September (our guide recommended to read "Call of the Canyon" by Zane Grey.) I decided to purchase the kindle version after the tour (started reading while in AZ) and actually got it for nothing, so it was even better. I really enjoy the way Zane Grey writes. In my mind I can visualize the scenery as I did when I drove through Oak Creek Canyon. It was absolutely beautiful and breath taking! I have to admit that USA does have the best mountains in the world. I'm from NY but not Manhattan and I could almost compare myself to the character of Carley Burch. She travelled to AZ by train, myself by plane (4 flights to different airports!). Following her true love after her many situations and indecisions, she finally makes her last attempt to return to Glenn. As they say, true love conquers all. Right now I am reading another one of his books called "Greatest Hits of Grey". I also have 2 others which I can not wait to read! After reading "Call of the Canyon" it keeps my memories fresh of my visit to Sedona and travelling through Oak Creek Canyon!!! I've become a fan of Zane Grey!!
When visiting West Fork north of Sedona, the information sign said "The Call of the Canyon" was based on West Fork area. I had never read a Zane Grey book and didn't expect that it is almost the equivalent of a Harlequin Romance novel. Interesting to read the language used during the early 1900's...I had a hard time keeping interest in the book so took a long time to finish it. I did recognize some of the areas described so am looking forward to another trip to Sedona area to see e.g. San Francisco mountains and hike one of the many trails in Oak Creek Canyon area.
Another Zane Grey Western Romance. This one set in New York City and a canyon in Arizona within view of the Painted Desert. Emphasis here on romance with the landscape coming a definite distant second. Much of the North-Eastern Section of Arizona is the territory to which many Indian Bands were exiled, the Painted Desert is just to the south near the New Mexico Border. As the book begins Glenn has just returned from WW#1 where he was gassed and endured unconscionable hardships that left him sick and injured in mind, body, and soul. To recover he headed west to recover his health. That he does is a minor miracle and one that weds him to this rough and ready frontier life. The storyline then revolves around whether or not his betrothed Carley can persuade him to come back East to the life of ease and luxury that is her milieu or if the lure of adventure, wide open spaces, and Glenn's love can tempt Carley to give it all up and move into a rude cabin with Glenn. To add spice there's girl he met out west and a cowboy who loves that girl. I fear I've read one too many Western Romances to fully enjoy this but the quality of Grey's writing holds up throughout.
Let's start with the price You can't beat free!
Now on to the book itself
From a technical standpoint, the formatting is pretty clean as far as free e-books go. No weird typographical issues and no maps or pictures to worry about.
I'll assume that if you're reading reviews you might actually want to read the book, so I'll try not to include any spoilers, but some brief plot summary It's the story of a wealthy young Eastern socialite whose fiance has returned from the first World War a changed man, physically and mentally. He goes West to find his health and himself, with the idea that he'll return when all is well. They correspond until she eventually heads West to find and woo him, in the process realizing that she too has changed. Their fate together remains in doubt until the end.
The author includes some wonderful descriptive passages about the Oak Creek Canyon/Sedona/Flagstaff area of Arizona in the early decades of the 20th century, which I very much enjoyed, having lived in that area, but also sprinkles the second half of the tale with what can only be described as diatribes about the loose morals of the time revealing feminine attire, which he blames for enticing rape; jazz music (the horror!); automobiles (with back seats!); along with birth control (race suicide!) socialism and the influx of foreigners.
